November 10, 2011 - ALATEC Employee Kennan Horn Participates in ADA Association
Ribbon-Cutting
Kennan Horn recently had the honor of participating in the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Army Defense
Artillery Association (ADAA) headquarters in Lawton, OK. Ken works as a Program Manager for ALATEC
at the U.S. Army Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill (USAFCOEFS) in Lawton, OK and is the
executive director for the ADAA. ALATEC is also a member of the Huntsville Chapter of the Air Defense
Artillery Association. Ken explained the importance of their new location in a quote in an article by Marie
Berberea in the Cannoneer:
“This is really a big deal for us. It lends a lot of credibility to the organization, and it gives air defenders
that come and visit a home or a place that they can come and do some work.”

September 22, 2011 - ALATEC wins COSMIC AFNORTH task order
On September 22, 2011, ALATEC was awarded the Air Forces Northern (AFNORTH) Communications
Division Support task order, which falls under our COSMIC contract. Program Manager Hutch Davis will
lead this effort, a one-year contract with two option years.
The AFNORTH Communications Division mission is to provide flexible communications to the numbered
air force (NAF) staff throughout the Area of Responsibility. As the Continental United States, North
American Region under North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the organization works
alongside its Canadian partners to develop and sustain missions systems to defend the U.S. from internal
and external threats.
ALATEC will provide support to AFNORTH Communications Division’s efforts to develop and sustain
missions systems to defend the U.S. from threats by integrating a plan for information assurance,
customer support, network administration, system and web administration into the development and
sustainment plans for these systems. We will perform systems integration services during the production,
testing and implementation of upgrades of developed systems. Additionally, we will provide sustainment
in the form of life cycle support, configuration management and software development and helpdesk
capability; as well as provide field/training support to fielded units for demonstrations and operational
contingencies in multiple geographic areas both CONUS and OCONUS. The team will also perform
analysis, system integration and operations support.
September 15, 2011 - ALATEC Space Grant contract extended
On September 15, 2011, the New Mexico Space Grant Consortium Office (NMSGC) announced
extension of ALATEC's contract until May 31, 2012. ALATEC works as the interface for the New Mexico
State Grant Consortium (NMSGC) Office to coordinate with Spaceport America and White Sands Missile
Range (WSMR) for scheduling and pricing of educational launches and the associated support services
provided by WSMR. ALATEC also provides a detailed description listing to NMSGC of all payloads as
well as their intended purpose at least 10 days prior to the scheduled launch date to ensure adequate
time to screen payloads for potential hazards and to ensure that payloads comply with national security
requirements. Additionally, ALATEC provides technical support for the NMSGC to the students who are
participating in the student launch and executes the engineering integration of the multiple experiments
into the canisters that fly inside the rocket.
Mr. Bruce Lewis, the current program manager for this contract, will continue to run and manage this
effort.
ALATEC’s Sutherland awarded TC Contractor Leadership Excellence Award
ALATEC employee Mrs. Mary Anne Sutherland was recently awarded the Missile Defense Agency (MDA)
Targets and Countermeasures (TC) Program Office Contractor Leadership Excellence Award. Mary Anne
is the Executive Assistant for the Deputy Program Director of Targets and Countermeasures and is the
first individual in TC to receive this award.
Mr. Scott Shifrin, TC Deputy Program Director, explained in a letter to ALATEC President, Mr. Larry
Anderson, why Mary Anne was chosen:
"Mary Anne's attitude is always positive. She is quick to offer assistance to the other Administrative
Assistants or TC Leadership. She does not balk at any work if it means easing someone else's burden.
Mary Anne is always anxious to learn more about the organization and new tasks. She treats every effort
requested of her with the same commitment and professional expertise. She is self-sacrificing and always
maintains the highest standards of conduct, appearance, and attitude."
ALATEC is extremely proud of Mary Anne for the exceptional service she provides and for winning this
prestigious award. Thank you, Mary Anne, for all of your hard work!
August 30, 2011 - ALATEC awarded SETA OK task order
On August 30, ALATEC was awarded the Systems Engineering and Technical Assistance (SETA)
Oklahoma (OK) Support of Army, Joint and Coalition Experimentation task order. This is our first awarded
task order under the SETA OK contract that we were awarded in June of this year. Under the leadership
of this effort’s program manager, Kennan Horn, ALATEC will provide Joint- and Army-directed
experimentation support for the next year to the Fires Battle Lab at Fort Sill, OK.
The Fires Battle Lab is conducting experimentation in accordance with the Army Capabilities Integration
Center (ARCIC) Experimentation Plan FY 10-11 to identify promising field artillery and air defense
warfighting and organizational concepts in line with current and future Army concepts. The Battle Lab will
conduct a series of experiments to refine Fires Brigade tactics, techniques and procedures as they relate
to Army, Joint and coalition operations.
ALATEC's objectives include: conducting focused exploration and experimentation to aid in the
production of quantitative and qualitative underpinnings for concepts and requirements validation;
planning, performing, and reporting results of directed experiments to support the development and
refinement of concepts, capability requirements and capability solutions; providing subject matter
expertise and other required support to Joint, Interagency, Multinational and Service experiments with
Army involvement; and designing, developing, synchronizing and executing experimentation plans.
